No Permission Needed. I've already Decided.
We’ve all said it: "I’ll start when I’m ready."
We wait for a spark of motivation, a sign from the universe, or a morning where we finally wake up feeling "empowered."
I have a hard truth for you: Ready is not a feeling. Ready is a by product of taking action.
If you are waiting to "feel" like doing the work, you have already lost.
In my last article 2 articles, I introduced the 4 Pillars to a Goal and the first pillar “Outcome”. In today’s deep dive, we’re breaking down Pillar 2: The Decisions.
This is where your goals live or die.
The War Inside Your Head
Most people think they have a "willpower" problem. They don't.
Your brain has these 2 parts that are constantly at war when it comes to your goals:
The Basal Ganglia: This is your habit center. ( I freaking LOVE learning about this)
The Basal Ganglia doesn't just store habits; it decides which action "wins" at any given moment. Every second, your brain has 1,000 competing ideas (e.g., Check email, Eat a snack, Start that project). The Basal Ganglia acts as a filter that suppresses the 999 ideas it deems "to much effort " or "risky" and lets the one "familiar" action through.
The Pre-Frontal Cortex: This is your decision center. Think of it like a muscle. It’s responsible for your discipline and your future. But like a muscle it NEEDS to be trained. Many people make decisions and operate from emotion (aka “feeling ready”).
Every time you make a decision to show up when you're tired, or write those 500 words when you'd rather scroll on your phone, you are physically strengthening the neural pathways in your Pre-Frontal Cortex. You are literally training your brain to become a person who finishes things.
Big Decisions vs. Micro-Decisions
A goal is made up of one "Big Decision" and a thousand "Micro-Decisions."
The Big Decision: "I am going to write a book by the end of 2026."
The Micro-Decisions: Deciding to sit in the chair. Deciding to open the laptop. Deciding to write the first sentence. Deciding to leave your phone in the other room, Deciding if you want music or no music, deciding to have a drink by your side, etc.
Most people stall because they keep looking at the Big Decision and they get overwhelmed. When the goal feels too big, your Amygdala (the brain's alarm system) shuts you down with fear and procrastination.
The Fix: The Rule of 1
To beat the alarm system, you have to shrink the decision until it’s impossible to say no. This is the Rule of 1.
Don't decide to fix your entire life today. That’s to much effort for your brain.
Don't decide to do the whole workout; decide to put on the workout clothes.
Don't decide to write the whole chapter; decide to write one paragraph.
Don't decide to clear the whole debt; decide to make one phone call.
When you shrink the decision, you bypass the fear. Once you’ve put on the clothes, the "feeling" of being ready usually shows up to meet you.
This Week’s Challenge
Stop waiting for a feeling. Pick one goal you’ve been stalling on and apply the Rule of 1 today.
Make the decision so small that your brain doesn't even notice you're doing it.
Hit reply and tell me: What is the "Rule of 1" decision you are making today?
Stop stalling. Start building.
I have an unwavering belief in your potential and wish you nothing but success
Angie.
